Qu’est-ce que le “Proof of Work” exactement ?
Proof of Work (PoW) est une méthode utilisée par les cryptomonnaies pour vérifier que les nouvelles transactions sont correctes. Comme ces réseaux n’ont pas d’autorité centrale, le proof of work garantit que les données sont fiables avant d’être ajoutées à la blockchain.
Puisque les cryptomonnaies n’ont aucune autorité centrale pour vérifier les transactions, elles utilisent à la place un réseau de participants pour valider les transactions et ajouter de nouveaux blocs à la blockchain. Le mécanisme de consensus « proof of work » détermine quels participants, appelés mineurs, peuvent effectuer cette validation. Les mineurs résolvent des énigmes mathématiques complexes pour se concurrencer, et le gagnant ajoute de nouvelles données à la blockchain. Ils sont récompensés par de la cryptomonnaie, mais uniquement après que d’autres participants du réseau aient confirmé l’exactitude des données.
Pourquoi est-ce important pour la blockchain ?
Le Bitcoin est la première cryptomonnaie, créée en 2008 par une personne surnommée Satoshi Nakamoto. Il a rédigé un document clé expliquant comment une monnaie numérique pouvait fonctionner sans qu’une autorité centrale, telle qu’une banque, ne soit nécessaire.
Un grand problème des monnaies numériques est que les gens pourraient dépenser le même argent plusieurs fois, un problème connu sous le nom de « double-spending ». Imaginez avoir un fichier numérique que vous pourriez copier et utiliser à plusieurs endroits, ce qui ne serait pas juste.
Pour résoudre ce problème, Nakamoto a conçu un système où des « mineurs » vérifient les transactions. Ces mineurs s’assurent que chaque transaction est correctement enregistrée dans un registre public, la blockchain. Grâce à ce système, les gens ne peuvent pas dépenser deux fois la même somme d’argent.
